I'm now in the process of actually packing my hospital bag since I got yelled at on Sunday by my friend Marty. :)
This was the original list that I had created:
Birth Plan
Health Insurance Information
Driver's License
Money for parking and vending machines
Robe
Slippers
PJ's
Underwear
Pillow or blanket
Lip Balm
Shampoo/Conditioner
Soap
Razor
Hair ties and clips
Brush
Make up
Deodorant
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Cell phone and charger
Book or magazine
Notepad and pen
Empty duffel bag (for all of the free goodies and gifts)
Maternity outfit to go home in
Baby going home outfit
Mittens, booties, hat
Receiving blanket
Diaper bag with
diapers
wipe cloths
blanket
Camera
Car seat
iPod
Snacks

I think it is a good list. You'll need several pair of undies, and if you don't want to wear the hospital pads, bring your own(overnight large type) the hospital ones are like a foot and a half long, no kidding!
You can certainly bring books and magazines, but you probably won't open them. The time goes quick and your sleeping or playing with baby or visitors.
Razors?- you won't care... That'll not be a priority for you, trust me. You can go without for a day, or two.
Keep the baby stuff to a minimum, most likely you'll head straight home, and will not need any of that, except the outfit/blanket/coat and seat . Your baby bottle of choice and maybe your pump?
Bra pads...trust me, a necessary item.
Here is what I think I'm going to take:
Birth Plan
Health Insurance Information
Driver's License
Money for parking and vending machines
Snacks
Robe
Slippers
PJ's
Underwear
Hair ties and clips
Deodorant
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Cell phone and charger
Maternity outfit to go home in
Baby going home outfit/blanket
Camera
Car seat
Pump and bra pads
We literally live five minutes from the hospital so I figure that if there is something I really need, my husband can just go grab it for me. Besides, he will have to make frequent trips home to take care of the dogs. I think this list is much better and it ensures that I would be lugging a giant suitcase to the hospital with me!
