17 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin
Even when you're still trying to conceive, it's smart to start taking prenatal vitamins. Your baby's neural cord, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, develops within the first month of pregnancy, so it's important you get essential nutrients, like folic acid, calcium, and iron, from the very start.
Prenatal vitamins are available over the counter at most drug stores, or you can get them by prescription from your doctor. If taking them makes you feel queasy, try taking them at night or with a light snack. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy afterward can help, too.
It took me a little while to get into the habit of taking my prenatal vitamin. I wasn't used to taking anything daily since I had been off the pill for a few months. I finally got myself in the habit of taking it every morning. I just take an over the counter vitamin. It has the same nutrients as a doctor prescribed vitamin but is less hassle to buy. I think the bottle I got is enough to last me my entire pregnancy and the pill just happens to be pink!
I also take an over the counter iron pill because I am anemic. I am also going to start taking my over the counter folic acid pill. I was taking that before I got pregnant but I wasn't sure if I should continue to take it during my pregnancy since it's also in the prenatal vitamin. Another tip in this blog series suggests that I should.
I have been lucky enough to be able to take my vitamins first thing in the morning, before I eat, and I have never gotten sick from doing so. I don't think I have ever gotten sick from taking pills on an empty stomach.
