Boobies

Catchy title, eh?

October is breast cancer awareness month.  I never used to pay much attention to this month.  Sure, I thought it was cool that people got little pink hair extensions and changed their profile pictures to pink but I never really paid much attention otherwise.

Now, I pay attention.

We don't have a family history.

We have a laundry list of health issues in my family but breast cancer wasn't one of them.

Until last year.

It has to start somewhere right?

As if my poor grandmother hadn't survived enough health issues, (diabetes, quad bypass, kidney problems, pacemaker) she had to add one more to the list.

We all told her it was going to be ok, that the lump was going to come back negative.

We told her it was going to be fine.

We were wrong.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2012.

The good news is that everything was fine.  They removed the lump, she went through 6.5 weeks of radiation and now she is cancer free.  She has to take, what she calls, a cancer pill for five years until she can actually consider herself cancer free.

And so begins our family history of breast cancer.

I've already asked my doctor about mammograms but she doesn't suggest I start getting them until 40 and insurance won't pay for them until then anyway.

It scares me.  A lot.

So I am going to be proactive and hopefully, if I do happen to get breast cancer at some point in my life, I will be lucky enough to catch it early like my grandmother.

On Sunday, the hair studio I go to will be hosting an event called Hope Cuts where they cut hair, do manicures, give the pink hair extensions and many other things and all the proceeds go to breast cancer research.

I'm getting the pink hair and may even get one for Baby Girl.

Do any of your local merchants host events to raise awareness?

  1. I got the pink hair too!! A local salon does that here too and I have been doing it for years. I did the Run For The Cure on October 6th and I got pink hair extensions for that. The sad thing is that this year the salon went with synthetic hair. They usually use real hair. Well you cant use heat on synthetic hair and I straighten my hair a lot so I only had the pink hair in for a week and got it taken out. It was driving me crazy.

  2. It is always smart to be proactive so good for you. Cancer (of all sorts) runs heavily in my family so I'm petrified of it.

  3. :[! My family had no history of breast cancer until earlier this year, either. But like you said "gotta start somewhere" unfortunately. I'm glad we have a month to bring attention and awareness, it seems like everywhere out here in california places are doing something in the spirit of it. I want to see your hair when you do it!

17 Tips - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin

17 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin Even when you're still trying to conceive, it's smart to start taking prenatal vitamins. Your baby's neural cord, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, develops within the first month of pregnancy, so it's important you get essential nutrients, like folic acid, calcium, and iron, from the very start. Prenatal vitamins are available over the counter at most drug stores, or you can get them by prescription from your doctor. If taking them makes you feel queasy, try taking them at night or with a light snack. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy afterward can help, too. It took me a little while to get into the habit of taking my prenatal vitamin. I wasn't used to taking anything daily since I had been off the pill for a few months. I finally got myself in the habit of taking it every morning. I just take an over the counter vitamin. It has the same nutrients as a doctor prescribed vitamin but is less hass...

HFMD

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (herpangina), and a skin rash. ( http://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/about/index.html) Are you kidding me? Blister-like sores in the mouth? Why do things like this even exist? What purpose does an illness like this that just torments little babies (and their parents) serve?  This stupid illness is currently 'running it's course' through my poor son. One week before his first birthday. Apparently it's 'going around' as the doctor so nicely explained.  Fortunately we only had one really bad day where he was not eating or drinking much and was just miserable. He was back to his usually happy self in no time even with blisters in his mouth. So this week, while my husband is away for work in Chicago and ...

29 Week Bumpdate

The heart rate today was 160 and all is well. Little Man is still kicking away all the time!  He sleeps until late morning and then he's all over the place for the rest of the day.  It's fun but it's also uncomfortable sometimes. When I weighed myself on Sunday, which is when I usually do it to update my pregnancy app, I was only up 15lbs.  As of today, though, I am up 17lbs.  I feel like I am growing at warp speed but the doctor assures me that I am measuring just fine.  I do feel like some of the shirts I wore two weeks ago shouldn't be worn anymore though!  The bump is growing! I have noticed that I have been waking up with swollen ankles every morning despite sleeping with them elevated.  I know this has a lot to do with the weight gain since I had such a problem with it last time.  Other than that, the normal heartburn and backaches come and go and I'm crazy tired but I don't really have any other issues.  I don't ever ...
