Wake Up Call

My kids have a pretty specific bedtime routine.  While the timing is always flexible, the routine itself is pretty spot on.  They get a bath every other night.  On bath nights, they get their milk before bath, take their bath, get dressed, brush teeth, read a book and go to bed, all usually by 9pm.  On nights that they don't get baths, the routine is the same, minus the bath.

Ashlyn's hair has been out of control lately.  It's been very dry and tangled and just a mess.  I asked for some help on IG and FB and got some great suggestions.  I've tried some already and they haven't really worked.  In an effort to help keep her hair from getting so bad, I figured I would try moving bath time up so that she wasn't going to bed with a wet head.  I thought this would help dramatically with the tangles.

So we moved bath time up and hour.  Kids take a bath early but then get to go back downstairs for some milk and for an episode or two of their favorite show.  We still follow the same routine otherwise and they are still in bed by 9pm but without wet heads.  Win.

I've done this twice now, once last week and once this week.  The kids seem to be fine with the change and never give us a hard time about going to bed.  They like that they get to go back downstairs for a bit after bath to watch something.

But then it happens.

Bryan wakes up crying bloody murder.

Last week, his diaper leaked and his pjs were wet.  I was able to change him and sit with him for a few minutes before putting him back in his crib where he fell back to sleep immediately.  This week I wasn't so lucky.  I sat with him for an hour before I was finally able to get him back into his crib.  He thought it was time to get up for the day.  I really just wanted to throw him in my bed and go back to sleep but I knew better.  He doesn't sleep anywhere but his crib and my bed means party time so that was a no go.

To be somewhat fair, his bedroom light was on.  We have ceiling fans with remotes but when my husband installed them, he didn't realize that they all have numbers inside that can be changed to correspond to a remote.  So now all of the remotes work on any fan.  So when we went to bed and turned our light off, his light turned on.

I don't know if he would have slept the whole night had his light been off.  I can't assume he would have since he did the same thing last week when we changed the routine.

Does anyone else have this issue?  One small change in routine throws off the whole night?

Does anyone else give their kids milk before bed?  At what age do you think it's appropriate to stop doing this?  We had stopped Ashlyn from getting milk a while ago but when Bryan started getting a cup of regular milk before bed instead of a bottle, we started giving it to Ashlyn, too, and I wish we hadn't!

17 Tips - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin

17 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin Even when you're still trying to conceive, it's smart to start taking prenatal vitamins. Your baby's neural cord, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, develops within the first month of pregnancy, so it's important you get essential nutrients, like folic acid, calcium, and iron, from the very start. Prenatal vitamins are available over the counter at most drug stores, or you can get them by prescription from your doctor. If taking them makes you feel queasy, try taking them at night or with a light snack. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy afterward can help, too. It took me a little while to get into the habit of taking my prenatal vitamin. I wasn't used to taking anything daily since I had been off the pill for a few months. I finally got myself in the habit of taking it every morning. I just take an over the counter vitamin. It has the same nutrients as a doctor prescribed vitamin but is less hass...

HFMD

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (herpangina), and a skin rash. ( http://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/about/index.html) Are you kidding me? Blister-like sores in the mouth? Why do things like this even exist? What purpose does an illness like this that just torments little babies (and their parents) serve?  This stupid illness is currently 'running it's course' through my poor son. One week before his first birthday. Apparently it's 'going around' as the doctor so nicely explained.  Fortunately we only had one really bad day where he was not eating or drinking much and was just miserable. He was back to his usually happy self in no time even with blisters in his mouth. So this week, while my husband is away for work in Chicago and ...
