7 Uses for Coconuts!

I found this article in my Woman's World magazine (July 18, 2011, Page 22) and I wanted to share it with you. The article provides 7 ways to use coconut juices and oils. I thought some of them could be quite beneficial, even to a preggo like me!

1. Ease stress and anxiety - "Research reveals that the scent alone is powerful enough to relax your nervous system and calm you down. The scent triggers the limbic system, the brain area responsible for mood and memory."
How to use it: "Dab on some coconut scented body lotion to enjoy the benefit instantly! Or light a scented coconut candle whenever you feel stressed."

2. Fight off infections - "Coconut oil is made up of nearly 50% lauric acid, which research reveals strengthens immunity and kills 99% of bacteria, viruses and fungi on contact!"
How to use it: "Three tablespoons of oil daily provide enough lauric acid to help prevent illness. Two tablespoons, three times daily can cut your recovery time by a whopping 57%"

3. Rev your energy - Coconut Water - "This naturally sweet thirst-quenching beverage contains electrolytes that rehydrate you faster than popular sports drinks made with refined sugars, artificial flavoring and food coloring."
How to use it: "Simply drink it chilled, especially after exercising or spending a lot of time in the sun."

4. Blemish-proof your skin - "Coconut oil controls oily skin and stops pimples. Its fatty acids reduce inflammation, speed healing and give the skin a healthier pH, research shows, which kills the surface bacteria behind acne breakouts."
How to use it: "Apply a small dab of coconut oil twice a day directly on pimples or over your entire face."

5. Beat belly bulge - "Coconut oil contains fatty acids that turbocharge metabolism by up to 50%, and a study in the journal Lipids showed that daily consumption reduces abdominal fat in women."
How to use it: "Try it in stir-fries, baking and anytime you'd use vegetable or other oils. Research shows just substituting coconut oil for vegetable oil could help you effortlessly shed as much as 30 pounds in one year!"

6. Cure dandruff - Coconut oils "fatty acids are quickly absorbed into the scalp and skin follicles, where they kill the fungi behind the itching and flaking."
How to use it: "Massage 2 Tbs. virgin coconut oil or 1/2 cup coconut milk into your scalp and hair. Cover hair with a shower cap to hold your body heat in, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo as usual. Try the treatment twice weekly."

7. Tame tummy troubles - Coconut may bring relief for stomach problems like indigestion or diarrhea. Coconut kills H. pylori, the bacteria behind stomach ulcers, on contact, plus it's one of the highest-fiber plant foods there is."
How to use it: "Sprinkle grated or shredded coconut on a bowl of fresh fruit or on toast for a sweet, healthy treat."

17 Tips - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin

17 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy - #1 Take a Prenatal Vitamin Even when you're still trying to conceive, it's smart to start taking prenatal vitamins. Your baby's neural cord, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, develops within the first month of pregnancy, so it's important you get essential nutrients, like folic acid, calcium, and iron, from the very start. Prenatal vitamins are available over the counter at most drug stores, or you can get them by prescription from your doctor. If taking them makes you feel queasy, try taking them at night or with a light snack. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy afterward can help, too. It took me a little while to get into the habit of taking my prenatal vitamin. I wasn't used to taking anything daily since I had been off the pill for a few months. I finally got myself in the habit of taking it every morning. I just take an over the counter vitamin. It has the same nutrients as a doctor prescribed vitamin but is less hass...

HFMD

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (herpangina), and a skin rash. ( http://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/about/index.html) Are you kidding me? Blister-like sores in the mouth? Why do things like this even exist? What purpose does an illness like this that just torments little babies (and their parents) serve?  This stupid illness is currently 'running it's course' through my poor son. One week before his first birthday. Apparently it's 'going around' as the doctor so nicely explained.  Fortunately we only had one really bad day where he was not eating or drinking much and was just miserable. He was back to his usually happy self in no time even with blisters in his mouth. So this week, while my husband is away for work in Chicago and ...

29 Week Bumpdate

The heart rate today was 160 and all is well. Little Man is still kicking away all the time!  He sleeps until late morning and then he's all over the place for the rest of the day.  It's fun but it's also uncomfortable sometimes. When I weighed myself on Sunday, which is when I usually do it to update my pregnancy app, I was only up 15lbs.  As of today, though, I am up 17lbs.  I feel like I am growing at warp speed but the doctor assures me that I am measuring just fine.  I do feel like some of the shirts I wore two weeks ago shouldn't be worn anymore though!  The bump is growing! I have noticed that I have been waking up with swollen ankles every morning despite sleeping with them elevated.  I know this has a lot to do with the weight gain since I had such a problem with it last time.  Other than that, the normal heartburn and backaches come and go and I'm crazy tired but I don't really have any other issues.  I don't ever ...
