#12. Part Two - Breast Pumps

Who would have thought that breast pumps could be so exciting?! I can't believe how many different products there are to choose from. This blog contains information on the four that I had mentioned in my previous blog. Since I base a majority of my opinion on reviews, I will start with the worst reviewed and work my way to the best reviewed.

Review:
“Tried to save money by getting this one... no suction even on the highest setting! Not fun to have engorged breast with a electric pump that does not work! The only thing that was nice about this is the bag that it came in... the bag being petite and easy to carry. Other than that, invest the money and buy a good one so that you don't have to exchange it later.”

Although this package comes with a lot items for the price, the review is terrible. The pumps look a little awkward to me so I'm not sure I would go for this one.

Playtex Petite Double Electric Breast Pump - $68.00
The Playtex Nursing Necessities Petite Double Electric breast pump is a lightweight, compact pump meant for occasional use. It has three levels of adjustable suction strength for your comfort.
• Lightweight, compact pump meant for occasional use
• 3 levels of adjustable suction strength for added comfort
• Massaging breast cups with 360-degree massage and suction
• Dual screw ring on the pump fits most bottles
• Wide nipple opening to improve pumping comfort
• BPA-free
• Comes with a AC/DC adapter
• Model: 06574

Reviews:
"This is a really great pump. I love that you can pump into wide neck, regular bottles or into the Playtex liner bottles. It's very easy to use, clean, and take apart/ put together. I also love that you can pump single or double! The only downside is that it's loud, and doesn't have a carry case or bag."

"I purchased this product and within a week had to exchange it for a new one because the tube connector broke. After two weeks with the new one the same piece broke again. I would not recommend this product!!"

This pump does not come with nearly as much as the other ones do. It got one good review and one bad review, enough to make me NOT want to buy it.

The next two had had the best reviews so I decided to do a little more research and include other items that I might get if I were to choose one of these two.

The First Years miPump Double Breast Pump - $61.54
The First Years miPump double breast pump is compact and sleek without sacrificing strength. Designed to help you breastfeed longer, miPump is simple, quiet, quick, and efficient. The miPump double breast Pump includes a unique handle which allows you to pump with only one hand, giving you the freedom to multi-task while pumping.
The First Years - miPump Double Breast Pump
• Comfortable flexi-fit breast shield ensures soft and proper breast pump fit
• Simple to assemble and use
• Unique handle gives you a free hand to multi-task while using breast pump
• Quiet - only you will know you're pumping
• Efficient - quick cycle time, adjustable suction levels with LED display
• Compact - so small it's easy to bring on-the-go, stylish tote for discrete travel
• Electric or battery-operated (uses four AA batteries - not included)

Review:
"The pump works wonderfully! It's great that it's a double pump because it only takes 10-15 mins to pump both breasts instead of 20-30 mins. It's great because the suction is good and I also like that you can up the suction to what feels comfortable to you. The only thing that I didn't really like is the the silicone cups that go on your nipple aren't clear so you can't really see if your nipple is in the center. But that would be my only complaint. Wonderful pump!"

This one got a great review and it seems to come with everything you would need. One of the best features is that it's compact and easy to travel with but doesn't seem to give in on functionality. If I were to choose this pump, I would also buy the following items:

The First Years BabyPro Bottle Sterilizer - $44.00 Who wouldn't want a bottle sterilizer? No more heating the bottles in boiling water to sterilize them.

• Kills household bacteria on bottles, pacifiers, small toys, and breast pump parts
• Directs steam deep inside bottles for better cleaning
• Holds 8 standard or 5 wide bottles
• Removable tray for nipples, breast pump parts, spouts, valves, pacifiers, teethers and small toys
• The First Years Bottle Sterilizer, BabyPro edition is proudly BPA-free

The First Years BabyPro Night Day Bottle Warmer $27.54 I think this product would be amazing. No microwave running and beeping in the middle of the night. Put the bottle in before bed to keep it cool, and heat it up when the baby wakes up. Simple as that! It has a built in night light to help with late night feedings and it can warm baby food jars.

• Unique cooler feature keeps 2 bottles cool for up to 8 hours
• Baby bottle warmer warms a chilled bottle in minutes
• The First Years Bottle Warmer works with most bottle systems
• Auto shut-off for added safety
• Baby bottle warmer is BPA Free

The First Years Modular Drying Rack $11.54 I probably wouldn't need this for bottle drying since I would have the sterilizer but I think it would be a great storage rack.

Avent Twin Electric Breast Pump - $182.00
• Ultra-comfortable and effective
• Control at your fingertips
• Infinitely variable speed, vacuum and rhythm
• Pumps more milk faster

• Philips twin electric breast pump model #SCF314/02

Review:
"I received a Playtex dual pump for a shower gift. I used it for almost 2 months before buying this one. I was looking for something to use when I went back to work. This has been the best thing ever! I can pump in 10-15 min. tops, way quieter than my other pump, and I love how I can adjust the pump to mimic the baby. I am exclusive pumper because my baby had trouble latching on so it is definitely getting put to work. I haven't even used my old one, I pack this one every where. Last thing I will add is much easier to clean than the other one. Worth every penny!"

There were quite a few reviews on this pump and they were all good. I guess it is worth spending the money. It certainly does come with a lot of items. If I were to buy this pump, I would also buy:

Philips AVENT Electric Bottle Steam Sterilizer $70.00 This steamer looks good and I like that everything stays sterilized for up to 6 hours.

• Just add water, load and switch on
• Contents are sterile and ready to use after cycle completes
• Contents remain sterile for up to 6 hours if unopened
• Extra protection through natural steam sterilization
• 110V

Philips AVENT Express Baby Bottle Warmer $36.54 This warmer doesn't seem to compare to The First Years warmer, especially since it only warms one bottle at a time and it doesn't look like it keeps the bottle cool too.
• Warms 4 ounces of milk in around 4 minutes
• Just add water and select setting
• Heats gently and evenly
• No hot spots
• Fits all AVENT bottles, magic cups and food jars

Philips AVENT BPA Free 6 oz Breast Milk Storage 10 Piece Set $14.50 I like these little cups. I think they are great for storage.

After researching the products produced by The First Years and Avent, I will say that I will probably go with The First Years. The bottles are sturdy and BPA free. Although the Avent breast pump got better reviews, I like the price of The First Years pump and it seems to have the same components. I think The First Years Sterilizer and the Avent Sterilizer are neck and neck but The First Years bottle warmer blows Avent's Bottle Warmer away.

When pricing all of these items, the total cost of the Avent pump, sterilizer, warmer and cups is $303.04 while the total cost of The First Years pump, sterilizer, warmer and drying rack is $144.62, for a difference of $158.42. Again, these prices are all based on Walmart.com but I think I'll take the $158 savings.

Blog Commenting Challenge!

Linking up with Jenna's Journey  for the 3rd Annual Blog Commenting Challenge! Hi! I'm Vanessa! I live with my husband Bryan and my amazing 6 month old Ashlyn in Pennsylvania. I was born and raised here and love it very much! We have 2 pugs, Katie and Utley, one black lab, Camo and one cat, Joey. Our second cat, Kitty, is sadly recently deceased (on Father's Day). I work full time as a Marketing Analyst for a supply chain consulting firm. I don't even know what that means really! I have been here for 3 years and am thinking about a career change. SAHM is looking better and better. My husband owns his own landscaping business which has been both wonderful and horrible at the same time! My husband and I know each other for about 17 years now and we have been together for 12. We got married in September of 2010, just 2 weeks shy of our 10th anniversary! We got pregnant after only 2 months of trying and last December we were greeted by Ashlyn Marie Miller,

I'm Not Gonna Lie

Anyone who knows me know that I LOVE Christmas.  I love the decorations.  I love to decorate my own house and see all of the other cool decorations other people have.  There is a house down the street from us that always has more lights and decorations than I have ever seen in one yard.  It's a bit much but it's an attention grabber. I love the Christmas tree.  I love to get the tree out each year (yes we have a fake because I can't stand the needles) and I love to decorate it.  Growing up, our family would decorate the tree together with all kinds of ornaments that we had collected over the years.  I like to do themes for my trees.  Last year I did pink and silver in honor of the newest member of our family.  I'm really hoping to instill the tradition of decorating the tree with my kids. I love finding the perfect gifts for people and I love to watch their reactions when they open those gifts.  I generally wait until I have purchased ALL of my gifts, I sort them

Big News!

We have been trying very hard to keep this to ourselves for just a little while longer but I can't wait anymore!    Baby Miller #2...due 09/01/13!!!!!!!!! I am 8 weeks and 1 day I have known since Christmas Eve I am much more tired and much more nauseous this time around I haven't gained a single pound yet, unlike last time I am not so secretly hoping it's another girl If this one is anything like Baby Girl, he or she will be born mid-August I've been leaving hints all over the place but no one noticed! I am so excited!   I've already had one doctor's appointment but I was only 7 weeks so there wasn't much to do.  We couldn't hear the heartbeat or anything so the next appointment will be much more exciting!  My next appointment isn't until February 11th so that's when I'll get to hear and possibly see my next little monster!  So exciting!   PS:  Notice the blog title?!
